Public Explanation on Archaeological Site – Makimuku, Sakurai in Nara [Tech/Nature/Science]
Did you go to a public explanation of archaeological site in Japan? For me, it was the first time. In 22nd of last month, I went to the exposition of 162th excavation of “Makimuku Ancient Site”, hosted by the Sakurai-city education commission, in Nara, Japan.
This site is near to the Japanese Shinto shrine, “Miwa Grand Shrine”, which enshrines the mountain itself. Around here, there are a lot of ancient tombs such as “Hashi-Haka”, in which the Japanese dawning queen, “Himiko”, might be buried - according to one theory. Some Japanese mass media picked up this excavation, and many archaeology manias were gathering. This is a picture of main reception desk.
I could see the excavated earthenware before my eyes. I heard it was made in the first half of the three century. Many of them are made in Tokai area – Now between Tokyo and Nagoya. Peoples who come to this kind of public explanation have a detailed knowledge of archaeology so that the question and answer between visitors and archeologists are quite technical. Being different to the museum exhibition, the earthenware give us a real lived-in feel as if these were used till yesterday. This site is one of a proposed place that Japanese yet-to-be-defined dawning kingdom “Yamatai” were approximately being, so that every visitor ware, as a matter of course, tend to ask question deeply and passionately.
This is a scene of public explanation in the real excavation site. The lecturer in charge of this excavation was just standing on the site, and explains what was discovered with a microphone. He “scientifically “explains facts that were revealed in the process of the excavation, and the assumption deducted from these fasts, considering past information on the excavation around here.
Judging the information in a comprehensive manner tells us that this is a part of huge high-floored construction product. Hearing his explanation of ancient geological scenery on this ancient site gave me a time slip feeling as if I were really standing on the ancient village. Though the mass media announced the expectation of kingdom finding, he did not directly mention to the doctrine that the kingdom “Yamatai” was in Kansai district. However, to my untrained eye, I could clearly guess that there would be a big high-floored building on the east side, the unexcavated area.
I could know in the excavation site that the Archaeology is a study that piles up evidences with very patient efforts, as if they are solving tremendous puzzles. In the first half of the three century, what kind of construction and people’s living ware there? I am looking forward to seeing the future excavation.

＜発掘遺跡説明会 － 纏向遺跡 （奈良県桜井市）＞
みなさんは、（日本の）遺跡の発掘調査説明会へ行かれたことがあるでしょうか？私は初めての経験でした。先月22日、奈良県桜井市の教育委員会による、纏向遺跡第162次調査現地説明会へ行ってきました。
山自体を神体とする、日本の神社。「三輪神社」の近くにこの遺跡はあります。この近辺には、一説によると、日本の黎明期の女王「卑弥呼」が埋葬されたといわれる、箸墓古墳のような古代遺跡が多くあり、たくさんの考古学ファンが集まっていました。これは正面受付の写真です。
目前で、発掘された土器をみることができました。聞けば、3世紀前半に作られたもののようです。これらの多くは東海地方（今の東京と名古屋の間あたり）で作られたもののようです。この種の説明会に来る方々は、考古学に非常に詳しく、見学者と考古学者の質疑応答は、非常に専門的です。博物館の展示物とは違い、この土器はまるで昨日まで使われていたかのように生活感があり、リアルに感じます。この遺跡は、未だ特定されていない、日本の黎明期の「邪馬台国」がおそらくあったであろう、候補地の一つで、見学者の質問も自然、熱を帯び深いものとなります。
これは実際の現場での説明会の様子です。発掘担当の説明官がまさにその現場に立って、何が発見されたかをマイクロホンで説明します。発掘の過程で明らかになった事実および、過去のこの近辺での発掘に関する情報も考慮して、これらの事実から導き出される推測について、「科学的」に説明がなされました。
総合的に判断すると、大きな高床式の建造物の一部であることがわかるそうです。彼のこの遺跡の古代の地理的情景の説明を聞いていると、まるで古代の村に立っているかのごとく、タイムスリップしたような感覚になります。マスコミは、古代王国の発見の期待に関して報道していましたが、彼は邪馬台国の畿内説への直接の言及は避けていました。しかしながら、まだ未発掘の領域である、東側の敷地に大きな高床式の遺構があるであろうことは、素人目にもはっきりと予測することができました。
発掘現場にて、考古学がまるで気の遠くなるようなパズルを解くかのごとく、地道な実証の積み上げの学問であることがわかりました。3世紀前半、どのような建造物と人々の生活がここにあったのか、今後の発掘に期待したいと思います。
