Amakashi Hills - Asuka Village in Nara [Sports]

It was slightly still hot in Asuka, Nara, Japan, though Autumnal Equinox Day was over. On one hand, we could hear the last summer cicada as little as possible. On the other hand, we saw a vast sheet of vigorous rice plants that would be soon harvested. It was a pleasant wind in brisk autumn days. Today, I went trekking in Asuka Village. This time, I took a course that intensively went around historic remains. It was such a substantial content that I divided the trip into two days. It was totally about 19 kilometer. Today’s topic is “Amakashi Hills” where people can enjoy viewing the best scenery in the course.

Walking for about 30 minutes, and passing by the “Toyoura Ancient Palace Ruins”, made me bring Amakashi Hills, - at a height of 145 meter above sea level - , into sight.

Looking up into space let me know many “Red Dragonflies” were flying. This is a dragon fly resting wings. I felt its beauty in the natural balancing.

The whole foot of Amakashi Hills is a park. To climb up there, we use a path for the peak. The scenery from here would be the most wonderful. People can command a panoramic view of Yamato Three Mountains. There is almost no place where we can see three peaks at once. The front mountain is “Mt. Unebi”.

Let’s transfer our gaze to the right. The center hill is “Mt. Miminashi”. The right behind trapezoid hill is “Mt. Kaguyama”. In the center of these three mountains, the ancient capital, “Fujiwara Palace”, was constructed. We can also catch sight of Nara City area in the distance. In the slight right, we will see “Mt. Miwa”.

In the south east side view, though it is now a rice paddy area, there are “Asuka Temple”, which was the oldest in Japan, and emperor’s palace ruins in early times. The top of hill is a sightly location where a person, who is familiar with the ancient Japanese history, can explain outlines seeing the scenery.

Descending the hills and waking along rice paddy made me find a lot of cluster-amaryllis is blooming, all over a foot path between rice fields. After seeing it, I visited a series of interesting places such as “Asuka Big Buddha Statue”, “Iruka-no-kubizuka - Tomb of Iruka’s Axed Head”, “Sakafune Stone” , “Legendary Itabuki Palace Ruins” and “Tachibana-dera Temple". Then I went back to Okadera Station on Kintetsu Lines. For souvenirs, I bought local bean cakes. I broke a brisk sweat. Here is also popular with a person who likes a bicycle riding. Amakashi Hills and the surrounding areas are the place I recommend you to be out for a stroll in autumn ideal weather days.

[Fig.1]

[Fig.2]

[Fig.3]

[Fig.4]

[Fig.5]
