Tekijyuku [Outing]
Today, I would like to introduce a private school called as “Tekijyuku”, - a school for European study through Holland - , established by Mr. Koan Ogata. At the end of the samurai period, a lot of students learned here. The school turned out many giants who cut out the Japanese modern period.
This is the front gate. Though it is narrow front, it is deep longitudinally. The person who read cartoon book series, “Hidamari-no-ki”, depicted by Japanese comic artist, Dr. Osamu Tezuka, might know this school. You can see the photo of his great-grandfather, - also a medical doctor -, Mr. Ryosen Tezuka. His face resembles Osamu’s “self-portrait” often seen in his comics.
Soon after entering, I could see Fukuzawa Yukishi’s calligraphic art. It is written in a good hand.
Here was a room where student are living. On the column surface, there are student’s sword-cut and doodles. This may be an early model of today’s dormitory. The room made me feel young energy. This room turned out giants who cut out Japanese modern period.
This is the “Kaitai-shinsho” translated from Dutch version of the German medical book “Anatomische Tabellen”. Tokugawa Shogunate had permit the trade only for Holland among European countries for a long time, because they did not bring a religion into Japan.
This is a dictionary called as”Zoof”. Students hit this book by rotation in the Zoof room that is only for dictionary browsing. Now, we can see the dictionary on the internet or CD-ROM. However, in those days, it was very limited chance to see the dictionary.
I could see many portraits. I picked up “Yukichi Fukuzawa”, the founder of “Keio University”. He is known for the face of ten-thousand yen bill. He also studied here. Address; 3-30, Kitahama, Higashi-ku, Osaka, Japan. Five-minutes walking toward eastern from the Midosuji subway station, “Yodoya-bashi”.
